The crime novel series of Jo Nesbo are very popular. Just like his novels, the main character, Harry Hole is also very popular. Hole is a very brilliant detective with extraordinary powers. He uses unorthodox methods to solve the crimes. Harry Hole is working with the Oslo Crime Squad as a police offer. His mother was the descendant of the Sami people. But, he lost his mother from cancer when he was in the twenties. His father, Olav Hole is a teacher, but his relationship with his father is not at all strong. His younger sister is suffering from down-syndrome. Born in 1965, Harry Hole remains unmarried throughout the novels but he has had close relationships with lots of women. Besides, he also has a few close friends.


Hole is a heavy smoker and alcoholic. He has a habit of engaging in repeated conflicts with some of his colleagues and superiors. However, Bjarne Moller manages to prevent Hole from these types of bad behaviors. Moller, the department head, is one of Hole’s closest friends. Moller knows that Hole is an extremely brilliant detective. Hole could solve lots of complex cases in Australia. He also got training in special interrogation techniques and firearms from the FBI. Usually, Hole undertakes unconnected cases and the culprits involved in these cases include gangsters, bank robbers, serial killers, etc. Though his extraordinary investigative capabilities, he spends most of his time for battling with alcoholism. The novels of Harry Hole are violent and multi-layered. 


The Bat is the first Harry Hole crime series of Jo Nesbo. The novel was published in 1997. It observed the murder of a young Norwegian woman. Around 20 million copies of Harry Hole thrillers have been sold so far.

Harry Hole received many awards and nominations. The crime novel series, The Bat received The Riverton Price 1997 as the Best Norwegian Crime Novel of the year. The Bat also received the Glass Key Awards 1998. It was recognized as the Best Nordic Crime Novel of the Year. In 2000, The Redbreast received the Norwegian Booksellers’ price for the best novel. Nemesis got awards for the Mads Wiel Nygaards Bursary 2002. The Redbreast has also received the Best Norwegian Crime Novel in 2004. The Snowman received Norwegian Book Club Price 2008.

Harry Hole is the best-known creation of the most popular Norwegian novelist, Jo Nesbo. The crime series novels of Jo Nesbo is getting extremely high profile film debut. The Snowman is the upcoming movie. Tomas Alfredson is the director and the Universal Pictures will release the film on 13th Oct 2017. The Snowman is the 7th Harry Hole novel of Jo Nesbo. This is the first time a Harry Hole novel is going to be adapted for the big screen. The Snowman, Michael Fassbender will handle the key role, the detective Harry Hole. A woman vanished under mysterious circumstances. Fassbender is probing this case. The only leading thread to this crime movie is her pink scarf, which was wrapped around a snowman.

Jo Nesbo is one of the best crime writers around the world. The crime series novels of this Norwegian writer are not only best-selling but they are also written fantastically. As mentioned earlier, the first Harry Hole novel of Jo Nesbo was The Bat, which was published in 1997. This is the first part of Harry Hole crime series. Nemesis, Police, and Cockroaches are some of the other bestsellers of Jo Nesbo. These novels are considered as the bestsellers because to a few reasons. Some of the reasons are good dialogues, detailed background story, surprising turns in the plot, a distractive main character, etc.

In the Novel The Bat, Harry is going to Sydney for observing the murder of a young Norwegian woman. He solves the problem by associating with a local detective. He also hunts for a mysterious psychopathic killer.

The Cockroach is the second novel in this series. Published in 1998, the drunken Harry is sent to Thailand on a plane to discover the murder of the Norwegian Ambassador in a Bangkok brothel. He discovers the streets of Bangkok with full of dangers and secrets.

There are total 10 Harry Hole crime novels. The Redbreast was published in 2000. The Devil’s Star, The Leopard, Snowman, the Redeemer, Phantom are the other novels in this series. As mentioned earlier, The Snowman is selected for the big screen. The author is now busy with writing another Harry Hole crime series novel, The Thirst. It is expected that the book will be published in May 2017.
