HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) system in a building consumes lots of energy. AC systems in warmer regions can cause around 70% increase in electricity bill. Therefore, the adoption of energy cost saving methods will be your major concern while using HVAC system. You can reduce the energy cost by adopting some easy methods. These methods vary depending on the local climate, type and age of equipment, current energy pricing, knowledge and experience, staff availability, use of an efficient system, etc.

Clean the Filter Frequently

The cost of energy can be reduced by maintaining the HVAC system properly. You can make the system efficient by replacing or cleaning the dirty air filters. This should be done by the help of a specialist. If you are planning to buy a new AC, buying a big one is merely waste of money. If the AC is too big, it cools down your house very quickly but it cuts off before reaching the peak running level. So, you should select a properly sized system, which runs longer. It is also essential to buy an air conditioner by checking the energy ratings.

Importance of AC Mister

Your AC will run more efficiently if it has an AC Mister. This is also helpful to cool the condenser with water vapor. Though the evaporative cooling concept is very old, it helps to reduce the electricity cost considerably. The unit takes more electricity if there is dirt or debris around the condenser. So the condenser unit should be cleaned frequently. Garden hose can be used for washing fin coils. If you are not aware of cleaning an AC unit, should seek the help of a specialist.

Replace Inefficient Systems

Less efficient HVAC system should be replaced with more efficient systems. In such a way, you can reduce energy cost by around 20%. Improved filtration technology can reduce the amount of bio-contaminants and particulates, which include fungus, viruses, and mold. If the HVAC system is efficient, it can filter out sulfur oxides, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and other air pollutants effectively. So, you can ensure a healthier environment in indoors.

Avoid Using Central AC

The HVAC filters should be changed regularly during peak heating or cooling seasons. The cost of new filters is very less compared to the energy cost of dirty filters. It is not wise to use central AC if you are not using your whole house all the time. Cooling a part of your house is cheaper than cooling the whole house. If you want to cool only one room, window AC is the best option. It is also helpful for avoiding energy losses through a duct system. Using mini-split system is the other best option for reducing the energy cost. It saves lots of energy compared to central AC systems.
